The School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia has asked Abate Pest Management to help in the research of canker in feral pigeons.

feral pigeon

The School is part of a collaborative research group investigating Trichomonas gallinae which causes canker in pigeons, dove and avian predators that feed on them. About five years ago the parasite suddenly jumped to finches and has become a major source of mortality in for instance greefinches and chaffinches.

The School at the UEA is investigating sources of this pandemic strain by sampling feral pigeons. Abate Pest management will help by taking sample swabs of any feral pigeons This is done by simply putting a sterile cotton-wool swab into the beak of the pigeon.
