Abate Pest Management performs magic and birds disappear

9 Dec

For over 5 years, Abate Pest Management has been servicing Bretts Transport’s 170,000ft2 ambient warehouse at its Guyhirn Distribution Centre in Cambridgeshire. Simon Brett, Managing Director has praised Abate for the services that they carry out to the required BRC requirement. He then asked if he could have some help at his private residence.

Simon has had an issue with birds at his house for some time. Pigeons were roosting at various places and depositing pigeon guano over window ledges, brickwork and onto the drive. He had tried several different methods to resolve the situation but didn’t have much success.

We advised that bird gel would be a great solution. Gel systems are a physical barrier to discourage birds from landing on buildings. The gel is applied to ledges and ridges in small pots. To the birds, the gel distorts their landing patterns and this discourages them from perching. It was later found that a gel solution had been tried before but not installed correctly making it ineffective.

We also recommended a spike system for a certain area of the property which consisted of strips of plastic spikes that again provide a physical barrier preventing birds from landing. They are a cost effective and adaptable solution that can be used on a wide range of buildings.

We cleaned down by soaking the affected areas with water and an anti-bacterial agent to prevent the creation of dust whilst cleaning all the guano. Our technicians then applied the gel and spike solutions throughout the necessary areas of the property.

Simon said, “It was like magic.  The birds instantly disappeared and haven’t been seen since the work was carried out”.

Jon Blake of Abate said “Bird control isn’t just for commercial buildings. At Abate we create a bespoke solution for the type of bird problem and the property concerned. There are several solutions that we use to eradicate bird problems. Every property is different.  We conduct a detailed survey to identify the best solution to use which may be based upon the age of the property; if it is listed and where the bird problems are taking place. To see all of the different proofing solutions, check out the bird control page on our website.”

How to deal with rats and mice in your home

31 Jan

Rats and mice continue to remain two of the top pests found in both domestic and commercial properties during the winter months, so how do you stop them getting in?

rats

From physical damage to your home to disease and bacteria associated with rodent droppings, rodents in the home pose a serious threat. Rats and mice have been known to chew through electrical wires, posing a fire hazard. Given the chance rodents will find just about any way to sneak into your home. Whether they are looking for food or simply a nesting site, if you haven’t taken preventative measures, they could choose your home. Rodents tend to be rapid breeders. Some species breed year-round, and populations are maintained through constant reproduction.

Here are our top tips on how to deal with rodent prevention:

Food

  • Store food in metal or glass sealed containers.
  • Clear up any food waste and crumbs from the sink, work surface and floor.
  • Ensure pet food is stored away when not in use.its-time-for-mice-to-move-in

Rubbish

  • Empty bins regularly and make sure lids are securely fitting.
  • Eliminate any food fragments from or around outside bins.
  • Compost bins should be fastened tightly.

Avoid clutter

  • Keep your house and garden clean and keep garden clutter to a minimum to reduce hiding places.
  • Avoid organic food waste in compost heap as this can attract rats.
  • Remove items which can be used to make nests such as cardboard.

Secure the building

  • Fill holes in exterior walls, roofing cavities and eaves.
  • Look behind furniture, in the corners and cabinets for any potential pest entryways.

Merry Christmas from Abate!

20 Dec

During the Christmas period it is inevitable that there will be extra food or scraps left over in your home, so make sure you don’t attract any unwanted pests this year.

xmas-2016

At Abate we recommend that you wrap any extra food to be saved properly and stored away in an air tight location such as a tub or in the fridge. If you do have any food waste make sure you dispose of it correctly as there is a chance it could attract rats or mice.

It’s not just food that attracts rodents into our homes. A cold snap will drive them into buildings in search of shelter.

Our team of qualified pest control technicians have dealt with many cases of rodent infestations. This experience has enabled us to build up an in-depth knowledge of rodents and how to deal with them in the best way. Whether it’s at home or within the workplace, we will be able to provide you with expert advice on rodent control as well as the best way to handle an infestation.

Here’s a few tips on how to avoid a problem with rats and mice:

  • Block gaps and holes – A gap under your door, pipe holes in walls, overhanging trees, cables or even a door left ajar can encourage rodents into your home.
  • Keep it clean and tidy – Rodent control starts with good housekeeping. Rubbish and overgrown vegetation should be completely removed from the outside of your home or commercial building.
  • Protect your food – Loose open foods should be kept in rodent-proof containers, denying them access to your food and any contamination. Rodents such as rats or mice may also go for your pet’s food so make sure that their food is not left out all day.

Our Christmas opening times

We close for Christmas at 2pm on the 23rd December 2016.

Back open again from 8am on the 29th and 30th December 2016.

3-day netting project on potato farm in North Norfolk

30 Sep

Abate Pest Management were asked to help a potato farm in North Norfolk to bird proof their new extension. The farm had invested in a new extension on the side of an existing building which also had a canopy added to it.

The farm was manufacturing their food products underneath the canopy, so needed a bird proofing method to stop the birds from nesting and consequently stop their droppings. Pigeon guano is highly infested by disease-causing organisms and can cause slip hazards and structural damage to buildings.

Not only is there a high issue with the pigeon guano, but when birds nest in buildings the nests are often contained with insects which can lead to secondary infestation.

We recommended bird netting. Netting systems that screen off problems areas can be 100% successful when installed correctly. Nets come in different sizes to suit different bird types and also come in a range of colours to suit your buildings masonry, so it’s important to pick the correct one.

Netting is one of the most versatile solutions for bird control problems. It provides a discreet yet effective barrier from all nuisance birds without harming them. Netting is also the most cost effective solution for large open areas.

At Abate Pest Management we have over 70 years of combined experience in solving you bird issues. With our experience and knowledge, we make sure that you remain in compliance with all terms stipulated by your BRC Auditors. We take a look at what is required and tailor our services to meet your individual needs.

If you are trying to find a solution to a bird problem, call Abate Pest Management today for free advice or visit our website for more information. Our skilled technicians cover the whole of East Anglia, providing a rapid, friendly and discreet response to a broad-ranging client base.

How to get rid of flies

29 Aug

There are over 110,000 species of flies in the world and over 7,000 in the UK. They are considered pests because of the range of diseases they can spread from gastroenteritis and dysentery to Salmonella and E. coli.

bluebottle-371123_1920

Left untreated a few flies can quickly turn into a hazardous problem – especially for restaurants and kitchens. What starts off as a seemingly innocuous situation can rapidly turn into a full blown infestation.

Calling in a professional pest management company is the best way to ensure that flies are completely eradicated from any commercial or domestic premises.

At Abate we have a range of treatments we can use to make sure we clear your home or commercial premises quickly and discreetly.  From fly screens, to electronic fly killers (EFKs), to sprays and glue boards. We will inspect your site, discuss the issues we find and agree with you on the best solution for your fly problem whether this be fly screens or fly control units.

This month we were called in to install fly screens in a school kitchen in Newport, Essex. We can make and fit made-to-measure fly screens for any window or door. These keep the flies out while still letting the fresh air in.  All our insect screens for windows have mitred corners and a flat smooth face that make them unobtrusive and easy to clean.

We also have a range of EFKs suitable for use in different locations. Some are designed for public areas – such as restaurants, bars, hotels, retail shops where fly control needs to be hidden from view, others are more suitable for problems areas which the public don’t access – such as kitchens.

This month saw us carrying out servicing and maintenance on some EFKs for a company in the Innovation Centre in Cambridge. The work included changing the glue boards in their units.

At Abate not only can we install fly control units we also service and maintain them. We will regularly change the glue boards and lamps in the EFKs and, if you are in the food production or packaging sector, we can also carry out fly counts. Monitoring and recording both the number and species of fly caught to enable quick identification of any regular pest issues.

If you would like help or advice with a fly problem in your home or business, contact the Abate team on 0800 9809797 or check out the pest control website.

Squirrels: pests or cute wildlife?

26 Aug

Keeping rodents under control is vitally important in any commercial or domestic premises. While we all appreciate the problems rats and mice can cause, many people are less aware that squirrels can cause significant damage and health problems if they get into buildings.

IMG_0117

Squirrels may enter buildings looking for food and shelter and when this happens they can cause a great amount of damage to products and to the fabric and structure of buildings. In rare cases, they can also pose a health hazard to humans. They particularly like loft areas in commercial and domestic buildings where they chew through wires, make a lot of noise, set off alarms and build nests out of the loft insulation.

It is important to call in the professionals to deal with any squirrel problems. It is against the law to release a Grey Squirrel into the wild so a professional approach is always advised. Red Squirrels are protected under the Wildlife and Conservation Act 1981 so it is important that managing wildlife such as squirrels should be left to the professionals. Not only can we ensure the current problem is eradicated meeting all legal guidelines and protections we can also ensure that all possible measures are taken to avoid a repeat of the problem occurring in the future.

Our team has been helping Cambridge County Council sort out a squirrel problem they have recently had in one of their care buildings. The squirrels had been nesting in the roof, using the loft insulation material and chewing through cables. We removed the nests, created and installed a bespoke metal mesh to fit onto all the guttering to prevent re-infestation.

We have a range of live cage traps, baits and proofing methods we can employ. Not only can we sort out the problem with the existing squirrels we can ensure your premises is effectively proofed against the pests returning and gaining access. We will check any traps on a daily basis and will check for entry points to ensure the squirrels are not able to get back into the premises.

Abate Pest Management is an ISO registered company which means we can meet the administrative demands of large businesses including an advanced service for food grade premises, packaging and pharmaceuticals that meet Soil Association, BRC and TFMS specifications.

If you would like help or advice with a squirrel problem in your home or business, contact the Abate team on 0800 9809797. We have a range of traps, baits and proofing measures we can use. Alternatively, visit our website.

Drone technology for pest control

27 Jun

Proud to be one of only a few companies in the region to be using drone technology to service high rise buildings.

INSPIRE-1-PHOTO

Over the past few months we have seen a significant increase in the number of call outs to install bird proofing products on both domestic and commercial properties. In order to maintain our high level of service we decided it was time to invest in the latest technology. So far it has proved a huge success, enabling us to inspect properties more efficiently and identify if pests such as seagulls are nesting on your roof tops using thermal sensors. We can provide CCTV footage of rooftops through the use of our 60ft pole.

Rain gutters and downpipes are a particular problem area when it comes to birds. Over time the bird droppings and any nests that are made in these areas can create a blockage. This can result in rainwater overflowing causing wood to decay, structural damage and possibly causing significant damage to rendering. These are all quite expensive problems to fix, so we believe that with the use of our new drone we will be able to service a wider range of properties. It will increase our safety when working at a height and it offers time and cost efficiencies in the long run. All the data captured from our drone can be processed by a smartphone or tablet, reducing the need to send people to investigate.

The drones that we use have custom built professional systems allowing us to view high resolution footage of the problem areas. The potential is extremely exciting news for the agricultural industry. Farmers will be able to see what the drone is looking at in real time, meaning that they can track the pest’s movements, secure their location and prevent them from harming their crops or livestock.

There are a wide range of bird proofing systems on the market today and with our expertise we can recommend the best method to control your bird problems. From netting, post-and-wire systems, spikes or gel systems to the latest in bird proofing technology – the Avishock system.
