Don’t let moles injure your players

27 Nov

MoleMoles can be a problem for both industry and private homes. The European (garden) mole cause significant damage to lawns, gardens, fairways and greens, sports grounds and public parks with their constant digging.

They can quickly become established, digging several hundred feet of runs and dozens of mole hills. In average garden or lawn soil a mole can dig 15ft (4m) an hour.  These mounds and ridges are the main cause of mole related problems as they can be unsightly but also pose a risk of injury to people especially in areas open to the public. This is a particular concern for local authorities and parish councils because of the threat of facing prosecution from injured members of the public.  People out walking their dogs, children playing in the park, teams using sports fields are all susceptible to potentially suffering injury. Mole hills can also cause damage to machinery.

At this time of the year when the rugby and football season is in full flight, moles represent a particular problem. A mole can invade a pitch and cause severe damage in a matter of hours – imagine coming to use your sports field only to find 50 mole hills!

Moles are solitary animals and very territorial about their area. They only come together to breed in March and May. So even a heavy infestation is likely to mean no more than 8 moles per hectare (3 per acre) even in areas with good soil and plenty of earthworms.

At Abate Pest Management we offer a trapping or gassing service for moles. These are the only 100% effective legal methods of control of moles. Due to the strict laws against releasing illegal chemicals into the soil it isn’t recommended to try and control a mole problem yourself.

If we use traps they will be checked daily. We can provide contracts and maintenance programmes for industries and organisations where possible prosecution is a real possibility. We can also provide technical support and advice over the phone. If you  have a mole problem that needs urgent attention call Abate Pest Management.
